At ease Sir, and welcome to the Officers' Club. My congratulations on your most recent guild promotion. Please help yourself to one of our finest cigars or perhaps a nice stiff after-dinner drink. Ahhh...an excellent choice. The Officers' Club was originally created to better inform those (like myself) with limited knowledge or lingering questions about the Historical Online Learning Foundation and related game systems. We do our best to fully address any questions (that we have or that are provided to us) having to do with HOLF, and/or this website. In addition, please feel free to report any errors, problems, or suggestions that you encounter on the Player' Guild Forum website to the Officers' Club. So if you are a Guild Member with any sort of question or comment, or you have an interesting and/or entertaining story to tell, or if you simply wish to regale your fellow officers with tales of your previous military exploits and successes, then I will inform the doorman to expect you again in the future. Until then, Sir!

The 2009 Spring Games were the brainchild of HOLF Director and Game Administrator John Sanders utilizing the NWOL game system designed by (and with the exclusive permission of) Stephen Schmidt. The Spring Games encapsulated three different scenarios (each with a two-campaign, twenty total turn duration) for players of varying experience levels and/or game preferences.

Scenario A was an NWOL-based hypothetical scenario pitting two very balanced and competing Italian fragmented states, Piedmont and Venice, against one another. The two sides fought for control of a number of Italian cities sandwiched in-between the two states and nominally under the control of the decaying Italian state of Lombardy (controlled by the GA). The scenario was designed for (but not limited to) newer NWOL players who could take on added command roles for preparation for NWOL3. The Battle for Northern Italy was a GITM-based scenario only. It featured two opponents with equal amounts of resources, troops, and territory.

Scenario B was an NWOL-based historical adaptation of the Great Northern War (1700-1721) simulating the earliest years of Sweden and Charles XII's failed bid to expand his Baltic Sea possessions. As was the case historically, Sweden faced the Northern Alliance - Denmark, Saxony, and Russia (with the Commonwealth of Poland/Lithuania as an indirect ally in the scenario). In addition, the Tartars and Ukraine were played as white cell (GA-operated) nations to provide game balance. Troop numbers were much higher than other scenarios, and as a result combat activity and associated casualties were heavy from the very start and continued throughout the game. This scenario was intended for Veteran and Cadre-level members of the Guild. It was expected to have a medium complexity level, and did not include much RAR involvement.

Scenario C was a loose adaptation of the early 18th Century Spanish Main using the PATE (naval) module with a number of special rules and features. Teams from Great Britain, France, Holland, Spain, and several notable pirates from the era competed against one another in a Caribbean slugfest. Force-mixes were considerably smaller than in other scenarios, and transports took on an added significance (not only for traditional uses but also to transport gold/treasure back to home countries).
This scenario was intended for Veteran & Cadre-level members of the Guild who are familiar with PATE or wished to improve their skills with PATE. This scenario included a number of special rules and could be difficult in complexity for newer players. All pre-game RAR relationships were pre-set though players were not bound by those relations.
