HOLF Official results for CWOL/NWOL

25 July 2009:Original dates supplied to the author were incorrect. They have been revised to existing records.
The following listing is the 29 March 2009 revision:
The official records for all CWOL and NWOL games are being submitted to the membership for review. While these results are construed as "official" by HOLF and the Players' Guild at this time, there has been some disagreement by early reviewers as to the accuracy of some results. It is hoped that a an open-ended discussion by all members with input on games will elicit results that can be (officially or unofficially) certified by all. It should be noted that the issuance of some Guild awards (like the new Medals of Victory) are dependent on resolutions being determined for each game. I am also interested in determining which teams each member played on in the various games (excluding the NWOL games - which I have records of).

Matt,

A couple of other things.

The Red River Campaign was the "filler" between CWOL IV and CWOL V. It took place over, I believe 10 or 12 weeks in the summer of 2000. The result was a CSA win. Almost all Union attempts to capture territory were stymied especially at Baton Rouge while the CSA accomplished its territorial objectives.

For the description of CWOL V you have inadvertently repeated the results of CWOL III. In fact it was a CSA win with the US surrendering on about Turn 28. At the time the Union had been ejected from Virginia and was fighting a losing battle for DC in the Potomac Valley. Elsewhere the Union had lost all of Missouri other than an enclave around St. Louis and the principal western Union army was facing encirclement and annihilation between Bowling Green and Nashville.

First critique

Courtesy of Jim Voege...BTW, the outcomes for CWOL VI and VII are all wrong. CWOL VI was terminated half way through due to the loss of GAs. Since the game system started the Union in a deep hole in order to give the CSA a fighting chance, nothing can be judged solely from the first half of a game. As for the rebs on the DelMar peninsula I was the union theatre commander there and had assembled an overwhelming force against them. Two more turns and they would have been slaughtered to a man. The rebs that were there wouldn't agree but that was because I had about 2/3rds of the Union force within movement range but out of their view.

CWOL VII was a decisive win for the Union. The CSA had taken but were about to lose Paducah. That was their only gain. Otherwise, most of Arkansas was gone, Fredericksburg was about to fall (the Army of Northern Virginia had been reduced to about 12000 men) as was Nashville. The CSA had lost about a third of Texas as well as Mobile, Charleston and a number of other Gulf and Atlantic coast cities. In all I think the CSA had lost about 15 cities over the course of the game which (I think) was 20 turns. Needless to say, as a result of losses taken all around the compass the rebel army had all be ceased to be an effective fighting force while at all points the Union army was still strong and in supply. Where you get the notion that the game was a draw is a mystery to me.
