Official Results for the 2009 Spring Games

After a longer than anticipated wait, the official results for the 2009 Spring Games are ready for release.

    Scenario A: The Battle for Northern Italy:
  • The scenario featuring all Novice players to the GITM game engine was won by the Venetian Republic team!
  • The Venetians won with a revised rate of 136% versus a negative rate of (-46%) for the Piedmontese
  • The Venetian team also won the Summer 1700 campaign with a 40% VP increase versus a negative return for the Piedmontese team.
  • Jon Vanvark (monarch), John Gordon, Phil Dean, and Taylor Rethmeier were the members of the victorious team.
    Scenario B: The Great Northern War:
  • This scenario featured veteran players re-fighting the first year of the unique contest of Sweden versus all the major powers in Eastern Europe in 1700. The scenario was won by the Elector of Saxony & his henchmen with a 45.9% Victory Point increase after accounting for the old miser's gold.
  • The Summer 1700 campaign was won by the Swedish team headed by the ambitious Charles XII (or madman; why would anyone fight half of Europe in two geographic locations separated by hundreds of miles & the Baltic Sea) with a 32.8% Victory Point increase. The nearest competitors were the Saxons with a 24.9% victory rating after accounting for all the gold of the Elector.
  • The Danish team came in second for the scenario by less than a single percentage point (>1%) over the Swedish team. It seems the few Crowns the Danish Monarch was able to save proved to be the difference.
  • This shy & bashful group of Saxons consisted of Guild members Jerry Gouge (monarch), Steven Mathena, and George Meyer.

NOTE:The Tartars, a member of the scenario B "white cell" (protrayed to keep game balance in the scenario) had a VP margin of 48.47% for the game. However, because this nation-state was working for the GA - it is excluded from any victory award.

    Scenario C: Fear & Loathing along the Spanish Main:
  • This scenario featured veteran & novice players alike fighting a PATE-only (the NWOL naval module) scenario among the colonial powers left adrift in the New World by the War of Spanish Succession as well as the more famous pirates of the period. After an involved accounting of Treasure delivered to the Home Country, it was determined the scenario was won by the British Colonial Government team with a 134,500% Victory Point increase after starting, as all Scenario teams did, with empty coffers.
  • The Summer 1700 campaign was also won by the British team with a 3542% Victory Point increase. However, the second place team for the Summer campaign was the Anarquía pirates who actually improved their victory total by 26% though being hounded by the Spanish Viceroy. This band of brigands was also able to double the size of its fleet during the scenario though it had no shipyard nor Home Country in support.
  • The Spanish Viceroyalty proved to be the largest exporter of Treasure to the Home Country, quadruplicating the nearest total of a competing colonial power. Though not a game criteria, the Spanish Viceroyalty was the only colonial power that contributed a positive cash flow to its Home Country during the scenario by exporting more cash than it took in return in the way of additional ships or maintenance costs.
  • The resourceful and strategic British Colonial Government consisted of Jim Voege (Governor-General), Matt Majewski, Matt Young and CR Reid as the new champions of the Spanish Main.

Regarding Scenario B

Hooray for us!

Long live the Elector!

Kudos to Matt and Dave for making us work for it.

George the Shy Henchman

Great Swedish party

As it is customary of monarchical regimes to create their own version of history ( :, this is what Charles XII would have written after this war:

“Lords of Sweden,

As you know, I have just arrived from Novgorod and would like to invite all of you for a great party which will take place in Karlberg palace. The events begin with a welcome cocktail on Friday night, and shall continue until Sunday evening.

The purpose, of course, is to celebrate our great victory over our continental enemies in what shall be known as ‘The Great Northern War won by Charles XII of Sweden’.

The international arbiters Johan Ericsson and Goran Carlsson who confirmed our victory (by calculating Sweden’s VP increase against the total/consolidated result of Russia, Saxony and Denmark) will be present. They were coincidentally in Stockholm, and Swedish hospitality would never allow them to leave my beautiful city with empty pockets, I mean, stomachs.

The ball will be full of interesting moments and below you can find some highlights, according to the organisation committee:

1. A show from ABBA, which was requested by our dear General/Admiral Angstlund. He loves their big hit RIGA;
2. The ‘Arrhuus Gala Ball’, organised in honour of Admiral Majewski. The exquisite detail is that the gigantic dance floor was built using the remains of the Danish fleet captured about 2 months ago. I know he will appreciate the irony of ‘dancing over Denmark’;
3. A triumphal parade in honour of Generals Barrett and Angstlund for their great victories at Riga, Dvinsk, Nyen, Novgorod and Kholm. In the occasion the palace entrance will be decorated with the standards captured from the Russians in those battles;
4. A Tartar Festival in honour of our ally Prince Ung Chan, who is in town to discuss how we will split Russia;
5. The execution of Coronel Inger Odell, former commander of the 17th infantry brigade. He was found guilty of treason and cowardice in face of the enemy, during the defence of Pskov. The details of his execution are too gruesome to be described here, but I am certain you will appreciate.

And much, much more surprises for my dear subjects.

The celebration, however, will be brief. We are again leaving for the continent in search for further glory. General Ken Felts is still in the Germany where we suffered a minor setback, but guarantees that the remaining Saxons and Danes will crumble in a matter of weeks if we send a couple Corps to reinforce him.

And, as you know, the Poles and Lithuans still think they are independent.

So cheer up men, we leave for Poland next week.

But please remind your friends to buy our War Bonds, financial situation is dire!!

Charles XII of Sweden”
