Word has just reached the city that the Russian-Prussian war has ended. Of particular interest, the treaty contained a condition that states:
“A commission will be established to oversee the formation of the
nation of Poland. This commission will have representatives from
Russia, Prussia, and Great Britain. The Polish state should be
established no later then 10 years from the signing of this treaty.”
As the grandson and heir of the Frederick Augustus II, Sachsen Elector Frederick Augustus III could make a claim for the crown for a newly formed Poland. The Elector’s grandfather was King of Poland until 1764 when he was overthrown by a Russian backed coup d’etat led by Stanislaw Poniatowski. There has been no official response to the announcement from the Elector or members of his cabinet regarding a possible claim to the throne or to any of the other terms of the treaty.
Poland
OOC.
Were in the rules does it refer to that Poland can even be consider a "frag, and or a revolutionary state and or independent State ??? I can find none, other then the reference that France is the only source of developing such revolutionary States. In addition "revolutionary States" can only be developed between seasons and not during campaigns if the rules are to be believed.
Respectfully,

Poland
It gets brought up every post-game, and I believe is usually shot down for introducing a very cumbersome process to the game, and upsetting the balance between Russia, Austria, and Prussia. Perhaps after we do a post-mortem of this game in regards to the Bourbons and any Revolutionary states that France may make (and unmake) it may be raised again as a possibility.

Poland
The major barrier is that it would require adding another monarch and five ministers and we don't seem to have quite enough player base to fill the extra positions.

Poland and Naples
Sure we have enough of a player base.
We just make put Naples under Spanish control (like it was), send those players to Poland.
This will create a much more realistic geo-political situation. Prussia Russia and Austria will actually have a "Polish problem" to be quarreling about (instead of having to invent one) and these goofy (in a late 18th century context) Italian Unions will not be springing up any more since they won't have the manpower and cash to be anything more than a weak minor.
This will be a step in the right direction of making the game actually look like something that might have happened in the late 18th century.
Just my two cents of course.

My 2 cents
Being new to NWOL, I am still learning all the ins and outs of this game. That in itself is making this simulation fascinating to me. Along the way, I have managed to meet some rather intelligent individuals who are trying to make this simulation the best it can be. A few points I want to bring out. I found this game by accident, advertising it appears to be very limited, taking advantage of the internet would probably greatly increase the player base. Having a Poland does create a more realistic geo-political scenario for the time frame involved and should certainly be looked at. Making adjustments to Italy would also be logical. Real Life interfered with my stating it sooner. Nick got the jump on me with his post. We are both certainly in agreement on this. I am kind of glad to see I am not flying solo with this opinion.

Web presence
Carl is right about the need to expand our web presence if we want to draw in more players.
While some of this would require a lot of work, changing the title of the NWOL page from "NWOL" to "Napoleonic Wars Online" would be a 2 second fix that could actually help. "NWOL" doesn't mean anything to the person that is googling for a Napoleonic wargame, so they could easily skip right past the link. That is a bad thing.
Rewording the opening sentence of the page to be more of a sales pitch might not hurt either.
Here is what Google tells people about us right now:
"Napoleonic Wars OnLine - a product of the Historical Online Learning Foundation ... The Napoleonic Wars OnLine (NWOL) is a multiplayer simulation of combat ..."
OK... while the fact that NWOL is a product of HOLF is certainly important, that information isn't going to inspire anyone to sign up that isn't already keen on HOLF. Otherwise all you learn is that it is a multiplayer simulation of combat, which is selling NWOL very short.
We need to find the two or three most important selling points of the game and make sure they are mentioned in the opening lines of the webpage.
This should be very easy to accomplish and hopefully will yield some tangible results.

Web Presence
Add the word "Game" to the title. A lot of searching is done on that key word.

After Action Reports
This is another thing that could help. A flourished report (like the ones in the Europe Universalis forum if any of you guys know it) of the NWOL3 Campaign, wars (i.e. France/Holland vs. Northern Shield) or even battles (the big one in Hannover) could increase awareness and interest. When I joined this club 3 1/2 years ago I had no idea that I would stay this long and like the game this much. Nothing prepared me for that!!
We did something like this after the Spring Games...we had little time to prepare but it came out pretty interesting...
If the overall community thinks this is a good idea I could try to do something along this line, but need i) You guys to keep your reports so I can use them as reference at the end of the war, and ii) Someone to fix the text.
Of course, if I win the game I will also need someone to write about me because modesty will prevent that ( - :

True, it would be historically accurate
It is a fact that Polish independence was used as a 'coin' by powers of the time, and I believe Napoleon was one who used this to create a strong ally in Prussia's/Austria's back. But it is something that Prussia, Russia or Austria could also have done.
But we need more experience with 'shared ownership' before implementing something that big. The Rev. state creation was implemented but not actually used (only for half a turn), so this will probably be something for NWOL4 or even 5.
Player base....another constant topic in the after-game discussions....not an easy subject. It has been some time since I last saw something about NWOL in The Wargamer or sites like that.
Marcelo
Well it would be a minor
Well it would be a minor wouldn't it? So 3-4 players. TBH I think it could be interesting if it's something Russia/Austria/Prussia could "create" if they owned 75% of the Polish cities. At least it then would have a 'big brother' so to speak. You could also make it act like a Major-Frag so it's VPs etc. get included in the major who made it.
Never post drunk...unless that is your norm.
Poland
Even if a larger Poland cannot be formed under current game conditions, a political discussion of forming one still makes sense in the game. In the future, plans could be made for placing leaders into newly formed countries.
In the case of Poland, there should be no trouble finding leadership for it. Frederick Augustus III should clearly be King and his ministers would become Polish ones. Actually, now that I think about it. Poland could easily be formed in the current game. Prussia, Russia, and Austria can relinquish control of Polish cities to the Sachsen government and we will handle it from there.
