Ligurian Gonfalone
Regency Ends as Girolamo Luigi Francesco Durazzo Assumes Throne of Liguria
The monarchy of Liguria, whose unsettled state has been a disruptive factor in Italian politics ever since the start of hostilities in the present European war today, has been stabilized by the ascension of Girolamo Luigi Francesco Durazzo to the throne. Cheering crowds lined the streets of Genova today as Girolamo rode to the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo to be crowned. Girolamo is the son of Maria Beatrice Victoria, a distant relative of King Victor Emmanuel of Sardinia, and Johann Adolf Freiherr von Thielmann, the former monarch of Sachsen who recently passed away after complications from broken arms, suffered in a fall from his horse when, apparently, some sort of round plate was thrown in his direction during a staff ride.
During a brief speech to his subjects, Durazzo thanked the Regent, Cardinal Cardonazzi, for his many and valorous services to Liguria during the interregnum. He announced that Cardinal Cardonazzi would remain as Prime Minister of the government for the indefinite future. While a full review of the military, foreign, and domestic policies of the kingdom will be conducted, Girolamo said to our reporter that he did not anticipate that there would be any substantial changes in those policies. "The kingdom has been run with piety and wisdom and it is our firm intention that those virtues should continue to guide Ligurian actions."
