Die Erfurt Zeitung, 1st Edition (under new management)

The battle for Erfurt rages on

After driving the Hessian militia from the city, Sachsen forces took up defensive positions north of the city blocking Hessian infantry from marching south. Both Hessian and Sachsen cavalry arrived shortly after and the two forces again clashed. A Hessian cavalry brigade was intercepted and completely destroyed before it could reach the protective safety of the Hessian infantry division. In the confusion following the melee, a Sachsen artillery regiment strayed away from its division and marched into the face of the Hessian force. Despite a heroic defense with the gunners defending their guns to the last man, the guns were overrun. Late in the day, additional Sachsen forces arrived and marched to the city, securing the fort within the city. Prussian cavalry also arrived before darkness fell but not in time to engage Hessian forces. It now appears that the remaining Hessian brigades in the vicinity are trapped between Sachsen forces holding the city and a Prussian force marching south from Magdeburg.
