Major announcement from the government
After days of secret and lengthy meetings, the Sachsen government announced today the creation of a new constitution patterned somewhat after the British parliamentary model. In addition to the constitutional changes, which include major reforms such as the abolition of serfdom in Sachsen lands, it was also announced that the country would no longer be named the Electorate of Sachsen but instead the Kingdom of Sachsen, with the Elector named King. The King will continue to serve as an Elector to the Holy Roman Empire. A date had not yet been set for a coronation, but it is expected that a date will be set in the near future.
Announcement of a victory near Erfurt
A spokeman from the Minister of War's office announced a victory over Hessian forces. Unfortunately the news of the victory was dampened with word from Berlin that the Prussians had issued a declaration of war.
Speech from Minister of State
The editor has received a copy of a letter by Graf von Funck, Minister of State, to the Sachsen public sent from directly from his headquarters somewhere outside Erfurt.
"To the citizens of the Sachsen Electorate,
As you may all now know, our nation and the Duchy of Würtemberg have become the targets of unprovoked aggression by the Prussia and her allies. The Prussians will claim that they are merely handling a "Domestic matter." Attacking a sovereign nation is clearly not a domestic matter, as the Sachsen Electorate and Duchy of Würtemberg have never been part of Prussian lands.
The Prussian Foreign Minister claims that Prussia is justified in attacking our lands because our Foreign Ministry attempted to get other countries to attack Prussia. While it is true that we did send messages to other nations, it was in an effort to sign treaties and form protective alliances to defend our nation from possible Prussian aggression, as is our right as a sovereign nation. The recent Prussian actions should serve as a warning and a call to arms by all small nations sharing a common border with Prussia. If Prussia would attack Würtemberg, which shares no border with Prussia and has never shown any aggression toward Prussia, and attack our country, which until recently was a Prussian ally; then they will most certainly show the same lack of regard for the sovereignty of other small nations. Larger nations should also take heed. If Prussian aggression is not stopped now, they will continue to attempt to annex one smaller state after another until they gain enough power to threaten the major nations of the world like Britain, Austria, and Russia. If this doesn’t happen within the next fifty years, it will certainly happen within the next one hundred.
The Prussian war with Hesse appears to have been an attempt to hide the fact that the Prussians had entered into some sort of secret agreement with the French and Hessians. Prussian duplicity surely must go back to the beginning of the summer or the end of spring when French troops were allowed to pass through Berg and Palatinate lands into Hesse so that they could then attack Bavaria and Austria. The Prussians later declared war on Hesse shortly after the Sachsen government did and ended up moving troops in the path of a Sachsen advance towards Kassel. They then signed a peace treaty with Hesse without fighting as much as a skirmish. Yet the Prussians have the audacity to claim that we were plotting against them.
In a speech made in conjunction with the Prussian Declaration of War, the King of Prussia claimed that the Prussians had never failed to fulfill their treaty obligations. This is untrue. The Prussians violated the first clause of the Treaty of Brandenburg with Sachsen the moment they allowed the French to pass through Berg lands on their way to Hesse as France was at war with Sachsen. They have broken the other clauses since. Clearly their disregard of the treaty they signed justified the need for us to seek additional support elsewhere. If the situation had been reversed and our government had allowed an enemy of Prussia to pass through our lands to attack them, I am certain that Prussia would not have hesitated to attack us.
Citizens of Sachsen, there is light in these dark times. The King of Bavaria remains a true and loyal friend to our nation and we have added the Duchy of Würtemberg to the list of our allies. Other free nations of the world will soon recognize the threat posed by a militaristic government that acts contemptuously to smaller nations, breaks treaties as it suits them, and makes unprovoked attacks on sovereign nations and they will stand with us.
Alles in Ehren
Mark you know the funny
Mark you know the funny thing, we would have helped you annihilate Hesse quite willingly. But you insisted on insulting myself and David in a personal fashion far out of any requirement within the game.
So yes. We went to Hesse to get VPs and when a better opportunity arose we took it.
YOUR duplicity and underground talk has led to your nation being at war. Unlike myself with Venice you have at least stable allies. Italy was nothing but disappointing to me when I was looking for a fun campaign, I haven't spent more then 6 turns inputting orders this entire game. Excuse me for trying to have some fun in what has been without a doubt the worst NWOL to date (which is a big shame cause I came into 3 with some high hopes, and this isn't a stab at Steve, JJ it's as much as player fault as anything else).

Nothing personal
I saw some of your comments on another post in the DR, and as the GA has requested that non-diplomatic discussions be moved elsewhere, I will respond here. Before saying anything else, I do think you were stuck in the worst possible location at the beginning of the game and didn't have much support. If we had been in reverse positions, I'm sure I would have been run over just as quickly.
To address the other quotes you produced.
"The Prussians lost their eastern cities through their own poor planning and terrible diplomacy" - 'It was terrible that we put all our effort and blood in defeating the French and got no reward whatsoever for it yea... horrible that we risked a Russian invasion to stop a French one.'
I believe you stepped into the position of FM/WM in Prussia too late to change the defense of Prussia against Russian attack. The truth of the matter is that there were more Prussian units along the Sachsen border (and I was an ally) than along the Russian border. At the time I became an ally of Prussia, I suggested that some of the units join me in my march toward the Russians and was told that they would remain. I don't know if the Prussian King took offense that a newcomer leading a small nation was giving him military advice but I was merely offering a suggestion and not criticizing his military ability.
I suspect there were so many Prussian on my border because Prussian leadership feared that some of the smaller German states planned to attack. I was the only leader of the southern German states to ally with Prussia and my peers may have thought I was a bit crazy to do so because early in the game, we collectively had received threats mixed with promises to encourage us to join an alliance with Prussia. It is this early treatment by Prussia combined with difficulty I had in attempting to provide military support to Prussia that made me criticize Prussian diplomacy. Most of this happened prior or just at your arrival to Prussia.
"he is an honest and honorable man but I cannot say the same for the King of Prussia or his new foreign minister" - 'this is why Prussia has acted as it has towards Sachsen. We wanted to DOW the moment we read this line and we withheld until we found an opportune time.'
I made these comments to the leaders of Sweden, Denmark and their allies on March 5 after discovering that French troops were entering Hesse and that Prussian leadership was aware and possibly approved of this. The beginning of the message was, " The Anglo-Hannovarians have announced that the French have moved troops from Berg to the Palatinate and I was informed by the Duke of Hesse that the intent of the French was to pass through Prussian/Palatinate lands through Hesse and then into Bavaria to attack the Austrians and their allies.
While this move by the French does not surprise me, what does surprise and dismay me is the fact that I am currently allied with Prussia, as are the Austrians, and it is plain that the Prussians are complicit in this plan. " I went on to conclude , "Again, I will not seek a war with Prussia but will defend myself if attacked. I ask that you not offer any aid to the Prussians should they decide to betray an ally in the future."
If it is not the case that you or the Prussian king was aware that the French were going to move into Hesse, your response to the Hannoverians the same day that read, "This is a Prussian matter, we are well aware of the French deployments and have been in contact with the French FM regarding them," sure made it appear that you did know and didn't oppose them, which would be a violation of the Prussian treaty with my country as well as the Prussian treaty with Austria.
"Prussians appear to be bent on becoming enemies of every major power in Europe and would stab an ally in the back if they thought they could gain something from it." - Now this one is only half true. We haven't become an enemy of any major, infact I would say under my tenure as FM relations with former enemy states has prospered. The only nation relations continue to decline with is the Sachsen Electorate and Austria (which to be fair Austria is merely supporting Sachsen, I have stated on numerous occasions to the Austrian Council that a war between our states is the last thing I want).'
This comment was also in the same message noted above. Prussia had been at war with France and Russia and by allowing French troops to move through Berg and the Palatinate in order to attack Austria, this would likely lead to a war with Austria. Again, if Prussian leadership was tricked or mislead by the French, your public responses didn't indicate this and instead made it appear that you were willing partners with France against Austria and her allies. During this time, I attemted to get information directly from Prussia and the Palatinate and was told that someone would get back to me. In one instance, I waited for 3 days and didn't receive a reply from Prussia until 2 hours after the next turn had run. While I waited, I did receive a message from the Hessians that repeated that the French were coming and that I could join Hesse and France against Austria or that I would be swept aside by the nations that were going to rise up and attack Austria. I chose not to join and declared war on Hesse instead and here we are.
The Palatinate is now allied with both Prussia and France and has attacked Wuertemburg. Prussia is at war with Sachsen and Wuertemberg as are the French. If this wasn't the intent of the Prussian leadership all along, then I apologize for thinking and publically saying that Prussian leadership was planning to stab me in the back. If my concerns were completely unfounded, then I suppose we can end the war immediately and call it all a big misunderstanding compounded by poor communication, bad choice of words, and paranoid decisions. Prussian troops can return to Prussia, we can renew our treaty and alliance, and I will conclude my war with Hesse.
I know that decisions made in the game are made not only for personal reasons (sometimes irrational) but for geographic and political ones. I don't take it personally. Unless someone includes a non-game reference, I stay "in character" when sending messages to other players and only refer to other players by their game aliases on the forum in order to make it clear that I see this only as a game and that a comment I make is "in character" directed at another "character" and not a personal attack on a player. I don't know you or David at all and have no reason to believe that you two are not perfectly honest and honorable people. The Sachsen War Minister, however, has reasons not to trust the Prussians and acted accordingly.
