Tactical Terrain at Gibraltar
The tactical map for Gibraltar has special features to reproduce the
particular terrain at that point and its impact on the Napoleonic
wars. The Gibraltar city tactical square is at 10-11. It is entirely
surrounded by water except for the square 10-10, which has high
hills. Because it is not permitted to move from a high hills square
to any other type of terrain except low hills in the presence of
enemy units (see GITM rule 8.5), this means that, if an enemy or
neutral unit is present, no unit (not even one allied to the side
controlling Gibraltar) can move from 10-10 to 10-11, nor vice-versa.
A unit can move from Gibraltar city tac square to the high hills, or
vice-versa, if all other units present are allied to it. Tactical
square 10-9 has low hills. This means that movement from other parts
of the tactical map to square 10-9 are possible, and movements from
square 10-9 to 10-10 are possible, even if enemy units are present
(for example, if defenders are in Gibraltar tac square). This allows
a hostile force to lay siege to Gibraltar by moving to 10-10 even
though it cannot enter the city from there. The Gibraltar garrison
will not surrender as long as it is supplied by water, but if it is
does not receive supplies, and the number of supplies in the fort is
reduced to 0, then the garrison may surrender under the same rules
as any other besieged garrison (see GITM rule 10.8).
Special note: Unloading from a TR into Gibraltar city tac square
should be possible, but at present the code will not permit units to
do so if they are not allied with all units already in the Gibraltar
tac square. Since this is a difficult problem to solve, and since it
can only arise if the coastal batteries at Gibraltar are destroyed
which is not thought to be a likely event, this code problem has not
been solved. Players wishing to conduct a hostile landing at
Gibraltar should notify the GA well in advance of their intended
landing so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
